Self esteem
Self esteem is the way we view and think about ourselves. As human beings, we tend to put value or measure of worth to ourselves or aspects of ourselves, which sometimes can lead to feelings of low self-esteem or dissatisfaction within us.
A person with low self esteem can be;
- Highly critical of themselves
- Can use negative words to describe themselves
- Lacks self-compassion towards himself or herself
- Often blames themselves when things go wrong
- Tends to judge themselves inferior to their peers.
Tips to improve self esteem
- Positive self talk : Talk to yourself as if you were talking to your best friend in a kind and compassionate manner.
- Count your strength : Focus on your strengths and things you are good at doing rather than focusing on your limitations.
- Practice self-compassion : start each day by saying positive messages to yourself, focus on things that you love to do and try to schedule them on a weekly basis.
- Practise self-care : practice self-care on a daily basis and appreciate your positive qualities.
At Mind Psychology we offer psychological intervention for people struggling with low self-esteem. We use a range of strategies such as helpful thinking, relaxation strategies, building self-compassion and distress tolerance to build positive self-esteem.
